Nobody held me.
The younger board man backed up until his shoulders met the wall.
The older one folded his arms and looked at the floor.
Einar crossed the boards alone with the iron out in front of him, and the tip faded from white to orange in the air.
"I said hold her," Einar said to the hall, and his voice cracked. "Friends, this is for her own good."
"Put it down, Einar," said the old woman in the middle of the hall.
She was still crying, and she said it loud enough to carry.
He kept coming.
I felt the heat of the iron on my face before I saw how close it was.
I did not step back.
I had stood at one fire already, and I was not going to give another one my back.
Rod moved.
He stepped in front of me, reached out and closed his bare hand around the iron's shaft just below Einar's fist.
The skin of his palm hissed.
The smell reached me, and Rod's face did nothing at all.
"Let go, Einar," he said in his flat slow voice.
