Chapter 22: Feeding Sleds
The feeding sled goes out at six, in the dark, behind two Belgian geldings with frost on their whiskers.
I stood on the bed of it with a hay fork, and Rod drove from the front with the lines in one gloved hand.
It was fourteen below.
Our breath hung in the air, and the runners hissed over the crust.
Out on the meadow two hundred and sixty cows came toward us through the blue light, bawling, in a long line.
"Cut the twine!" Rod called.
I cut the twine and shook the bale open off the back.
Green hay fell steaming on the snow, and the cows pushed in around the sled.
I did it forty times, until my arms burned.
Somewhere around the thirtieth bale Rod stopped the team and came back along the sled.
He took my frozen hands in both of his and pushed them inside his coat, flat against his bare stomach.
I yelped.
"You're frozen through," he said.
"You're warm," I said.
"It's the one thing I'm good for."
"It's not the only thing," I said.
His eyes crinkled.
