Chapter 7: The Drift

Marit's POV

The Drift leaves Daniel Junction at first light on the second Thursday in June, and every ranch in the Association sends its cows.

By five in the morning the road was packed with nine hundred head of mother cows and calves, bawling in the cold.

Riders flanked them on both sides, and dust was already rising into the pink light.

I rode my sorrel mare on Rod's off side, with a hundred and forty Halvorsen cows ahead of me.

Five weeks I had worked his cows by day and his bed by night.

Nobody on that road had said a word to me since sunup.

They said plenty to each other.

I heard it go down the line when we passed, my name and then his.

An old woman on a fence said one low word that I chose not to hear.

Rod rode a big dark gelding, easy in the saddle, with his hat low and the heeler running at his stirrup.

Every few minutes his eyes came across to me and went back to the cattle.
