Chapter 5: Smell of Nothing
Dinner at the lodge was one long table and no place to hide.
Torin sat at the head. I sat as far down as Ingrid's seating chart allowed, between Anders and an elderly woman who kept asking me to pass the potatoes and then not taking them.
I was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, because the silver ring on my wrist hadn't faded, and I didn't want to explain it.
Every time I looked up, Torin was looking somewhere else.
Every time I looked down, I could feel his eyes on the top of my head.
"Eat," Anders murmured. "You've pushed that chicken around for ten minutes."
"I'm not hungry."
"Your wolf is. I can hear her stomach from here."
I ate.
Halfway through the meal, a man I didn't know leaned across the table. "Miss Aaberg, may I ask when you'll be leaving us?"
"Thirty days," I said. "Or when the Alpha answers."
"I'd have thought a woman with any pride would go home."
"Enough," Torin said from the head of the table, very quietly.
The man closed his mouth.
Nobody else said anything. The room was silent except for forks.
I put my napkin down and stood up.
"I'm going to get some water," I said, to nobody.
The kitchen was empty and dark, with the dishwasher humming.
I filled a glass and drank it standing at the sink.
I heard him before I smelled him.
"You shouldn't have to hear that," Torin said from the doorway.
"Which part?"
"Any of it."
He stayed at the far side of the kitchen island, and the whole stone counter lay between us.
