Chapter 6: Doesn't Bleed

The Council envoy did not sit down to read it.

He stood in the middle of the hall with the leather case open and read out loud, in a voice made for reading things out loud.

"By the law of the Council of Alphas, a rejection of a mating mark that does not bleed has not been accepted by the bond."

Nobody moved.

"The mark of Dane Brickell therefore stands. The stake of the Lycan King also stands. One wolf cannot be bound by both."

"Then she's my mate," Dane said, quick and bright. "That settles it."

"It does not." The envoy turned a page. "Such a conflict is tried at the Moon Stone, at the next full moon. That is seven nights from now."

"And until then?" Caius said.

"Until then the wolf stays on neutral ground."

"My house is not neutral," Caius said.

"It is the Crown's house, Your Majesty, and the Crown holds no claim until the trial." The envoy looked almost sorry. "I will stay with you to witness it. You will forgive me."

I looked at the floor, and then at the old woman by the window, who was looking at me.

"Why didn't it bleed?" I asked the envoy.

"Sometimes a bond sleeps," he said. "Sometimes the rejection is too soft."

"It wasn't soft."

"Then the stone will say."

He closed the case.

I did not say another word to Dane, and he did not look at me again.

Back at Highcrest the envoy took the room at the end of the east wing with a polite nod and went to bed.
