Chapter 17: Bram's POV

Bram's POV

He had said to come alone, and I did not.

I left forty Stonefell wolves in the black orchard behind the chapel wall with orders to wait for the horn, and I walked in through the front doors with Hesper beside me.

She had braided her hair tight and tied the black ribbon around her burned wrist.

She had not said a word since Greywater.

I knew what she was doing.

She was counting.

The chapel was lit by one candle.

Hesper knew the way down, and we took the stairs Maud had scrubbed every week for seven years.

At the bottom the rite chamber opened out in its cold stone, and the elders' benches stood empty.

The first slab was bare.

On the second lay Elspeth, chained at the wrists, with the blade of a long silver knife flat against her ribs.

Torin stood at her head.

His coat was gone.

He wore his shirt open at the throat, and I saw that his skin had gone the colour of tallow.

His eyes were hollow.

One nail pulled out of the ground in Ravenhold's orchard, and the man had aged ten years in an afternoon.

"Warden," he said. "You brought your wolves. I can smell them on the wall."

"I brought what I wanted."

"Put your hands on the rail."

"No."

"Do it, or she bleeds."

I set my hands on the cold iron rail at the foot of the first slab, and four Ravenhold guards came out of the dark and put silver chain around my wrists.

I let them.
