Chapter 20: Hooks

The weight left my back so suddenly that I thought I was dead.

A black shape had hit Torin from the side, and the two of them rolled off me into the current.

I came up in the shallows choking, with water streaming from my fur.

Bram's wolf had Torin by the shoulder.

He had counted to ninety, not a hundred.

He had come under the burning weir with the river on fire above him, and he had not shifted back once.

Torin screamed, and the sound bounced off the stone.

I dragged myself up the ledge on my forelegs.

I changed, and the cold air stung my bare skin.

I gripped the silver nail with both burned hands.

It scorched through the old blisters.

It was the tenth nail, the heart of the ring, the one Torin had driven into this stone the same autumn he cut the false mark into my shoulder at the graves.

"For the hundred and four," I said.

I set my foot against the arch and I pulled.

The nail did not move.

On the right side of my back, the true mark flared.

Across the ledge, in the water, I heard Bram's wolf give a deep groan, and the flare in my chest answered him.

A great warmth went through my arms from my shoulders to my fingers.

The nail came out of the stone with a high clear ring.

It turned to rust in my hand and fell apart, red dust running down my wrists into the water.

All along the river, at once, I heard the silver nails at the Aldane graves crack.
