Chapter 10: She Runs to Him
I read the line twice.
Don't drink anything Carys sends you.
I looked up.
Carys had stopped crying.
She was watching my face with a terrible, exhausted calm.
"I drank it every day," I said. "Three years. Every morning."
"Yes."
"What was in it?"
"I don't know." She said it very fast. "I swear to God I don't know. Rafe's healer mixed it, and I only packed the box and sent it. It was to keep you calm. That's what he said."
"Keep me calm."
"So you wouldn't..." She stopped.
"So I wouldn't what?"
"Shift," Carys whispered.
Nobody spoke.
Out on the lake, a loon called once and went quiet.
I stood there with Ewan's letter in my hand.
I thought of every cold morning in Edinburgh and every cup of that sweet brown tea.
I thought of every night I'd stood at a window under a full moon and felt nothing at all.
The boards under my feet started to hum.
"Briony," Ewan said carefully. "Your eyes."
I put my hand to my face.
It was hot.
The moon had cleared the ridge, round and white, and its light came through the dusty loft window and fell across my hands.
My wolf stood up inside me.
She didn't ask this time.
She hit my ribs, hard, from the inside, and every nerve I owned lit white.
"Get away from the door," I said, and my voice had turned low and strange.
Ewan was already moving.
He caught Carys by the arm and hauled her out of my way, and I went through the loft window on all fours.
