Chapter 15: My Mother's Dress

The Kingsley great hall seated two hundred, and that night it held more.

Rafe had not cancelled the feast.

He had decided, standing in the study door with his hands empty, that the only way to keep his seat was to hold the party anyway and name his Luna in front of the pack.

"Come," he had said to me. "Bring your little book. Let them decide."

So I came.

I wore a black dress borrowed from one of the Hartwell sisters, a size too big, and Ewan's mark on my neck was uncovered.

Ewan walked at my left in a clean shirt, and Corbin walked a step behind us.

I had shown Corbin the last page on the stairs.

He had read it twice, gone gray, and said, "Not here. After. I'll tell you everything after."

I had let him walk in with us anyway.

The long tables were laid with silver candlesticks.

Rafe sat at the head under the Kingsley crest, and every Redmoor wolf of rank was on the benches below him.

The five elders sat in a row.

None of them looked at me.

The doors at the far end opened, and Carys came in.

She wore white silk.

It was an old gown, with long sleeves and a high collar and small bloodstone buttons down the back.

It fit her very well.

The whole hall stood.

I knew the dress.

I had seen it in a photograph on my grandfather's mantel my whole life.

My mother had worn it on the night she became Luna.

"Sit," Rafe said warmly, and the hall sat.

Carys walked the length of the room with her chin high and her hands folded.
