Chapter 17: The Council Sits
They held the hearing in the Bowl, on the same sand where I had fought Rafe.
The crack I had made in the floor of it was still there, pale and long, running from one side to the other.
Nobody had raked it over.
Nine packs sat on the stone tiers, each one under its own banner, and the torches threw their shadows up the walls.
The envoy sat at a plain table in the middle with his notebook open and two silent men on either side.
He didn't wear a robe or a crown.
He wore the same gray coat, and when he spoke, the whole pit listened.
"The Council has one question," he said. "Did the Alpha of Redmoor use a mate mark to drain a woman of her wolf?"
I stood on the sand with the ledger in my arms.
Ewan stood at my shoulder, and Corbin beside him in a shirt with no pin.
Rafe stood across from us with his head up.
"The Alpha will answer," said the envoy.
"No," Rafe said. "I marked a woman I believed to be my fated mate. I rejected her when I learned I was wrong. Rejection is my right under the oldest law we have."
"That is true," the envoy said. "Rejection is lawful."
A murmur went up the tiers.
Rafe's mouth curved a little.
"But the Compact of Nine Packs forbids a mark kept on a woman to starve her wolf," the envoy said. "Miss Hartwell. Put your evidence on the table."
I carried the book across the sand and set it down in front of him.
He opened it to the last page.
He read it for a long time, and the two silent men beside him leaned in to read it too.
