Chapter 4: You Should Be Dead

"No," Ewan said.

He hadn't raised his voice.

"It's my grandfather," I said.

"It's Carys."

"She's the one who sent me those care packages for three years. She cried at my airport. She's scared of Rafe, Ewan, I saw her."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"I can't go inside that lodge," he said. "If Rafe's wolves catch my scent on the property, they're allowed to kill me."

"Then wait at the tree line."

"Briony."

"I'll be twenty minutes."

He said nothing, which was how I knew he had given up.

I pulled the blanket off my shoulders, and he took it from me, and for a second neither of us let go.

"Twenty minutes," he said. "Then I come in."

Carys said nothing as we went down the slope behind the lodge, only held my hand in the cold and kept glancing back at the trees.

The brass key opened a green door under the kitchen windows.

The service stairs smelled of old floor wax.

We climbed three flights in the dark, with Carys's cream coat brushing the wall in front of me, and she stopped on the top landing and put a finger to her lips.

"The night nurse is asleep," she whispered. "Quick."

My grandfather's room faced the lake.

He lay propped on three pillows in his big oak bed with the oxygen line at his nose and the curtains open, and the early light made his face look thin and gray.
