Chapter 12: Homecoming
I stopped the recording and stood up.
My old body would have tripped on the stair.
This one didn't make a sound.
I went up the steps backward, three at a time, and slid into the dark pantry off the kitchen corridor.
I pressed my back to a shelf of flour sacks.
Genevieve's heels came up the stairs.
Click. Click. Click.
She passed the pantry door.
Then she stopped.
I heard her breathe in through her nose.
She was a wolf too. She'd grown up with my smell in every room.
"Rats," she muttered.
The heels went on down the corridor, and the kitchen door, and the car.
I stood among the flour sacks until the engine faded down the mountain.
Then I ran up four floors to Kieran's door.
He opened it before I knocked, hair wild, shirt half on.
He hadn't bothered with the buttons.
The lamp behind him lit the tattoos down his chest, black vines and moons I'd never seen all of.
I'd run up four floors barefoot in a nightgown.
I suddenly knew exactly how thin it was.
"I heard you coming up the stairs," he said, low and rough with sleep. "What happened?"
His eyes went over me once, fast, looking for blood.
