Chapter 23: The Run

I took off my clothes on the broken shore of the lake and gave myself to the moon.

The change came the way it always did, as a pull behind my breastbone that turned into a stretch.

My spine bowed.

My hands dropped into the wet gravel and closed into paws.

The cold went out of my skin as fur rose over it, thick and warm and chestnut, and the world opened.

I smelled spruce and hare and dark wet earth, and the three of them.

A great gray wolf stood on my left with his head lowered.

A red-brown one stood on my right with his tongue lolling, grinning in a wolf's way.

A black one pressed against my shoulder, lean and quiet, with his dark eyes on mine.

Their joy filled my chest in three bright strands.

Remy took the lead up the ridge path with his tail low.

The rest of us flowed after him.

We ran in a loose line between the pines, over rotten patches of snow, with the moon enormous over the lake.

Alexis darted ahead and doubled back to nip my flank, and I snapped at him, and he yelped with delight.

Hugo ran at my shoulder, steady and watching.

I felt the one small pulse under my own heart, very quick, running with us.

At the cemetery the line slowed.

Remy halted at the foot of the gray stone and lowered his great head.

The rest of us stopped beside him, and for one long moment all four of us were still.
