Chapter 6: Alexis
Mireille's POV
"Slower," Alexis said. "Mimi. Slower, or this ends in about a minute."
"Good," I said, and rolled my hips again.
I was astride him in the big bed in the flat white light of the afternoon.
The quilt was kicked to the floor, and the stove ticked in the corner.
He lay on his back with his sandy hair stuck to his forehead and his hands spread open on my thighs.
I had slid down on him slowly, one inch at a time, and watched his face change with every inch.
He was slimmer than Remy and very hard, and he curved a little.
Every time I rocked forward he rubbed a place inside me that made my toes curl.
"Oh, God," I said. "There."
"There?"
"Right there. Don't move. Let me."
"I'm not moving," Alexis said faintly. "I'm lying here and being used. This is the best day of my life."
I laughed, and the laugh moved through my body and into his, and he groaned.
"Don't laugh," he said. "It does something. Don't."
"I'll do whatever I want."
"I know. That's the whole problem. That's the whole beautiful problem."
I braced my hands on his chest and began to ride him properly.
I lifted until he nearly slipped free, then sank down, deep and slow.
His eyes rolled shut.
I did it again, and he gasped and arched his hips to meet me.
My breasts swayed with every stroke, and he opened his eyes and watched them.
"Look at you," he said. "Look at you, Mimi. I'm going to remember this when I'm ninety."
"You're going to remember a lot more than this," I said.
"Is that a promise?" he asked.
"It's a term."
He grinned, and then his smile slipped.
I felt him go still under me, and his hands tightened on my hips.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Nothing," he said.
"Alexis."
"I was thinking about Etienne," he said, and his voice broke on the name. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I know you said not to."
I stopped moving.
I leaned down, still full of him, and put my forehead against his.
"I said not to use his name as a reason," I said. "Not to say it at all. That wasn't the rule."
"I'm in his wife," he said.
A tear ran sideways out of the corner of his eye and into his hair.
"He was my best friend. He was my brother, and I'm in his wife, and I'm so happy that I can't breathe."
"I know," I said.
"What kind of man does that make me?" he asked.
"A man who loved him," I said. "Like me."
He turned his face into my neck.
His whole body shook.
I held his head against me and rocked slowly on him, tender now, hardly moving, and let him cry.
I cried a little too.
It was the first time since the funeral that anyone had cried with me, and it did not hurt the way I had feared.
It let some air into the room.
After a while his breathing steadied.
He kissed my collarbone and my throat, and then, wet-faced and shy, my mouth.
"Thank you," he said.
"Don't thank me," I said. "Roll over."
"I'm already on my back," he said.
"Sit up, then."
He sat up under me, and I wrapped my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck.
