Chapter 14: The Letter
"I want to know why you wrote me a letter," I said.
Domenico stood at the church sink with water running off his wrists.
"I have never written you a letter."
"Five years ago," I said. "I was twenty-three."
I took him to the bakery that night, because the letter lived there.
It lived in the cash drawer on Harlem Avenue, under the tray with the fives, beside a lottery slip from 2019.
I unfolded it on the counter under the register lamp.
It was typed on Bellandi Linen stationery, with no signature.
Dear Miss Vitale, it said. The house of Bellandi regrets that the proposal does not suit. We wish your family well.
Domenico read it standing up.
He read it twice, and then he picked it up by the corners.
"Where did the proposal come from?" I said.
"From my father. I agreed to it."
"You agreed."
"I was twenty-eight," Domenico said. "I bought a suit for the day. It was the gray one."
I looked at the gray sleeve that held the letter.
