Chapter 17: Two Parties, One Wall
The caretaker cut the banquet hall in half with a crank, and then he went home, because it was Wednesday.
The wall was an accordion of brown panels that had not been unfolded since 2004.
It had one service hatch, the size of a pizza box, and forty people on each side.
On the east side, Pietro was holding the stag party for the groom.
On the west side, Lucia was holding the bridal shower for me.
The women drank prosecco and ate pastel mints, and my mother's friends opened gifts with a great deal of wrapping paper.
I had the green tin in my handbag, because after Sunday I did not like leaving it alone.
Through the wall came the sound of forty men laughing too loudly at nothing.
"They're being very quiet," said an aunt.
"That is quiet?" I said.
A tray came through the hatch.
It was a pan of sausage and peppers, still steaming, with a card that said: With the compliments of the gentlemen.
In both our families, a gift tray must be answered with a larger one.
