Rosa's POV
Carlo stood with both hands flat on the tablecloth, and eighty men waited to see which way a patriarch falls.
"My son has spoken well," Carlo said. "It is a day when a man might say a great deal."
"Plainly, Carlo," my mother said, from the tent flap.
Eighty heads turned toward her.
Carlo shut his eyes and opened them again.
"I put my son at your table so that you would leave," he said, to me.
"I built him a legend, and I sent him to frighten you, because I wanted the market whole."
A propane heater ticked in the quiet.
"Five years ago I typed you a letter," Carlo said.
"I told my son your family had refused him. Then I wrote in pencil that he was not to be told."
At the foot of the table, Pietro had put down his fork.
"I want to hear you say you're sorry," I said. "Not the house of Bellandi. You."
"Rosa," Carlo said. "I am sorry."
"Thank you."
