Chapter 13: White Roses
I went to Sea Cliff alone, after dark, in a cab.
My brothers argued about it for an hour in the kitchen.
In the end the second brother wrote down the address, the time I left, and the time by which he would come looking.
He handed me the paper like a permission slip.
The Radcliffe house stood behind a hedge of cypress with every window lit.
I had grown up in it.
I let myself through the side gate with the key I had never given back.
She was in the garden.
I saw her from the end of the path, standing under a floodlight in her gray coat among the rose beds.
She had a pair of shears in her gloved hand.
She cut one white rose, trimmed the stem on a slant, and laid it in a basket.
She did it again.
She did not hear me until I was close enough to touch her.
"Lucy," Genevieve said.
She didn't turn around.
"Nuala," I said.
