Chapter 22: The Morning After
I did not cry in the Atrium Room, or in the car, or in the elevator.
I cried in Lawson Bexley's front hall, with my forehead on his chest and my gown crushed between us, for a long time.
He held me and said nothing, and the greyhound leaned on my legs.
"You said no cameras," he said at last, very gently, into my hair.
I laughed against his shirt, a wet unsteady sound.
"There was one camera."
"There were eleven," Lawson said.
"There was a boom, a stream and a newspaper's whole table."
He lifted his head.
"It's rule three, Nuala, and I'm just pointing out that you broke it."
"I'll make it up to you," I said.
"Make it up to me upstairs," he said.
I took his hand.
In his bedroom I let him unzip the green gown, and it fell around my feet.
