Chapter 7: The Ballroom Crew
Three days before the gala, my old banquet captain walked into the Bexley Marina Club ballroom with his white gloves in his pocket.
"I was told you needed a floor manager," he said.
He had a silver crew cut, a straight back, and thirty years of Radcliffe Embarcadero on his name tag.
"I can't pay you yet," I said.
"I didn't ask you to," he said.
Behind him came the night doorman, the head florist with her arms full of eucalyptus, and the pastry chef, who was carrying a sheet pan and glaring at all of us.
"It's our day off," the pastry chef announced.
"We're not working."
"We're standing around being useful."
I hugged her, and she let me for a second before she complained about the oven.
By noon there were twenty-two of them.
Waiters, line cooks, a bellman, two housekeepers who said they'd come to fold napkins and then took over the seating chart.
Nobody had told them to come.
They had heard I was doing it, and the word had gone through the Radcliffe staff in a day.
I had never been so afraid of being loved in my life.
My brothers carried chairs.
They carried them in stacks of six, then eight, with the fifth brother weeping over a centerpiece he said was too beautiful and the twin who talked narrating every trip aloud.
The twin who didn't talk walked behind them with a tray of coffee, handing cups to everyone in order of exhaustion.
At two o'clock the quiet twin put one in front of the banquet captain.
The old man looked at it, looked at him, and nodded once, and I knew they'd be friends for life.
