Chapter 10: The Paper
On Saturday morning Soren introduced me to the juice co-op's buyer as "the guardian angel of the Tollefson Marsh."
We were standing in the receiving station, a long tin shed with a scale at one end and a steel conveyor running the length of it.
The buyer was a brisk woman in a quilted vest, with a clipboard and a smoker's voice.
"Signe's my new stepsister," Soren said, with his hand light on my back.
"A hospice nurse. She sits up with the dying so the rest of us can sleep. We're very proud."
"I'm sure," said the buyer.
"She's the reason we'll have a harvest supper to remember."
I stepped sideways out from under his hand.
"I'm here for my mother," I said. "I don't have anything to do with the harvest."
"Modest," Soren said, to the buyer. "It runs in the family."
She laughed and went off to look at the scale.
He steered me through a steel door into the glass-walled office.
It held a desk, a space heater, and a calendar from a feed store.
He shut the door and sat on the edge of the desk, and the smile left his face.
"Sit down, sweetheart."
"I'll stand."
"Suit yourself." He took a folded paper from his vest. "I had this drawn up."
It was a single page on heavy cream stock.
I read it standing.
It said that I, Signe Aasland, was the girl in the account of October 2009.
It said the debt of the Tollefson family was owed to me.
It said the debt was to be settled on terms agreed with Soren Tollefson, on behalf of the family.
