Chapter 14: The Water's Edge
Ansel's POV
I buttoned my shirt, left the sleeves up, and went out onto my grandmother's porch to meet my brother.
Kasper held the thermos out to me without a word.
I took it.
It was coffee, black, the way we had both drunk it since we were boys, and I had no idea why it made my eyes sting.
Behind me, through the window, Signe was pulling her sweater on.
"Sit," Kasper said.
We sat on the porch steps, side by side, looking at the dead hydrangea.
"I carried the wrong one up that hill," he said.
"You didn't know."
"I never asked." His big hands hung between his knees.
"I had Soren screaming in my arms, and I thought, thank God, that's the one who's hurt. I walked right past you."
He stared at the hydrangea.
"You were sitting on the dike with your arm open to the bone."
"I was wrapped in a blanket by the time you looked."
"By the time I looked," Kasper said. "That's the point."
I drank the coffee.
I had imagined this talk a hundred times, and in none of them had it been quiet.
"Seventeen years," he said. "I let you carry that scar around, and I told people it was a burn."
"Soren told people it was a burn."
Kasper looked at his boots.
"I let him."
"You didn't know."
"Ansel." He looked at me. "I'm your oldest brother. Whatever else I know, I should have known that."
He wasn't asking for anything.
He said it flat, and I understood that it would not be a speech and that it did not need one.
"What did Soren do?" Kasper asked.
I told him.
I told it in four sentences, because it only took four.
Kasper's jaw went hard.
