Chapter 17: The Whole House Listening
His door shut behind us, and the whole house was listening.
I could hear it.
My mother and my stepfather were in the kitchen below us, washing up and laughing quietly.
Kasper's boots crossed the landing, and stopped, and went on.
Somewhere down the hall a floorboard creaked in a way that sounded careful.
"Ansel," I whispered. "They know."
"They know," he said, against my hair. "They all know. They saw you kiss me in front of two hundred people."
"We're going to have to be quiet."
"We're going to have to be very quiet."
I felt him smile against my temple.
"You're smiling."
"I've been smiling for an hour," he said. "My face hurts."
His room was small and tidy, with a narrow iron bed, a plain wool blanket, and a shelf of agricultural bulletins.
There was a lamp on the nightstand.
I switched it off, and he switched it back on.
"I want to see you," Ansel said.
He undressed me by lamplight, slowly, button by button.
I stood still and let him.
He took off my dress and laid it over the chair.
He unhooked my bra and set it on top.
When I was bare, he stepped back and looked.
"Say it," I said.
"You're lovely."
"Better."
He kissed my shoulder.
"You're lovely, and you're mine, and I stood in a barn tonight and said so to the county."
"You said you were the boy."
He was grinning.
"That's the same thing."
I laughed, and he clapped a hand over my mouth, laughing too, silently, shaking.
We fell onto the bed.
It squealed.
We froze, and from the room next door came a distinct, polite cough.
"Kasper," Ansel whispered.
"I'm going to die."
"Then die quietly."
I pulled him down.
I undressed him, shirt and jeans and shorts, until he lay bare on the blanket beside me, and I kissed the scar on his arm and the line of his ribs.
