Chapter 8: Not a Word

In the morning I told the whole table the truth, and Kasper was the only one who didn't look surprised.

"Matt isn't real," I said. "I made him up."

My fork was in my hand, and my mother was at the stove with her back to me.

She turned around very slowly with the coffeepot.

"Signe Martha."

"I'm sorry, Mom. It was a test."

She set the coffeepot down.

"Of what?"

"Of them."

Eero put down his toast.

"That is not funny," he said. "I lost sleep. I looked up funeral homes in Marshfield."

"There are four of them," Kasper said, from behind his coffee. "He called two."

"I called three."

Soren threw back his head and laughed.

He laughed until he had to wipe his eyes, and he slapped the table with his palm.

"Oh, that's good," he said. "That's very good. She had the whole table. Dad said steady trade."

"It was steady trade," said my stepfather, from the head of the table, and I realized he was smiling.

"I knew," Kasper said.

I stared at him. "You did not."

"You can't lie, Signe. You looked at the gravy boat."

I opened my mouth and shut it.

"Why?" Eero asked, wounded. "Why do it?"

"Because four men stopped me in four hallways on Thursday," I said, "and not one of you asked what I wanted."

Nobody spoke.

"So I thought I'd find out what you wanted. I told you I had a man. And all four of you stopped eating."
