Chapter 20: Nonna's Left

The bells of St. Mary's rang for the ten o'clock Mass as we came down Genesee Street.

Snow lay along the sills of the old brick storefronts, and the sky was a hard bright blue.

The social club stood in the middle of the block, with a green awning and a tin sign that said CORVINO MUTUAL BENEFIT, 1931.

It was a narrow building, and four stone steps led up to its door.

I looked at the steps.

I did not need to be told which ones they were.

Valentine stopped the car at the curb and sat with his hands on the wheel.

"Those are the steps," I said.

"Yes," Valentine said.

"You walk up them every Sunday."

"Every Sunday for twelve winters," he said.

"Then you'll do it once more," I said.

I took off my glove and laid my hand on the back of his.

He turned his hand over under mine.

"Whatever happens in there," he said, "you walked in on your own feet."

"I know."

"I want you to know that I know," he said.

"I do," I said. "Let's go."

We got out.

The man in the gray cap parked behind us and did not get out, and two more cars pulled up behind his.

Old men stood on the sidewalk in black overcoats and good hats, smoking, and they turned and watched us come.
