Chapter 17: The Back of Her Head

Ellis found me on the dorm roof on Monday night.

I had gone up there to read the dean's email for the ninth time, and the access door had been propped open with a brick.

He stood just inside it with his hands out of his pockets, which I had never seen before.

"I can leave," he said.

"You were told to stay away."

"I know. The terms said until the panel." He looked at his boots. "That was Saturday."

I turned a page of nothing in my lap.

"What did the dean say?" I asked.

"A conduct hearing, after the ceremony. Until then I'm on notice." He tried to smile. "I get to go to class, and she gets to watch."

"Will they expel you?"

"Maybe."

"You told me you were prepared for that."

"I was," he said. "I am. I just didn't know it would feel so quiet."

The wind pushed at my cardigan.

Below us the quad lights came on in a long curve, one lamp after another.

"Sit," I said. "Over there. Not here."

He sat on the low wall at the far end of the roof, ten feet from me, with his elbows on his knees.

"You broke my terms," I said.

"I know."

"I said you tell the panel after I've spoken, when I'm in the room and can say my part. You stood up in the middle of her speech, and you didn't ask."

"I know."

"Don't say 'I know' again."

"Okay." He rubbed his face. "I couldn't sit there, Marlo. She was reading your sentences, and then you were looking at your knees."
