Chapter 20: The Sticky Note
Dani was waiting at the foot of the administration steps with two coffees and a very bad poker face.
"You smell like a hardware store," she said.
"It's soap."
"It's a hardware store. We'll talk about it after." She handed me a cup. "Who sent the complaint?"
"It says anonymous."
"Sure it does."
She walked up the steps beside me with her phone in her hand, and I didn't ask why she kept it pointed forward.
The dean's office had a long window and a long table.
The dean sat at the head of it with a printed page in front of her.
The professor from Statistics sat at one side, and on the other, with her hands folded, sat Keeley.
She was in a pastel sweater again.
She looked at me and her eyes were soft and sorry.
"I didn't want it to come to this," she said.
"Please sit, Ms. Armitage," said the dean. "A formal complaint came in last night with an attachment. It is an email, sent from your college account, at 6:12 yesterday evening."
She turned the page around.
It was short.
"Keeley, you're right, I'm sick of pretending. Yes, I sold my notes to Ellis for four hundred dollars, and I told him to say you copied me because I wanted your place at Southern. Please don't tell. N."
I read it twice, which was twice more than it deserved.
"I didn't write this," I said.
"It came from your account."
"At 6:12 yesterday I was on my way across campus and my laptop was in my dorm. Nobody was in the room."
"Somebody could have been," Keeley said gently.
"Who?"
"I don't know. I'm only saying." She spread her hands. "It's just so sad, Dean. I wanted to protect her. She's been under so much stress, and when people are stressed, they say things."
