Chapter 6: One Problem

I found Ellis the next morning outside the vending machines, feeding a dollar into a slot that kept spitting it back.

"Did you take my old notebook?" I asked.

He looked at me, and then at the dollar.

"No."

"It was on my desk, in my room, and it's gone."

"Marlo, I've never been in your room." He smoothed the dollar flat against his jacket and tried again. "I'd have to be an idiot to take something from you now."

"You'd have to be an idiot to take it ever."

"Yeah," he said. "I'm that, too."

He wasn't lying, and I knew his lying face.

It was a quick glance to the left, the one he used on the professor when he said he'd lost his homework.

He had not done it once.

"Then who has been in my room?" I asked.

His jaw worked.

"I can't say," he said. "Not yet."

"Because you don't know, or because you're protecting someone?"

The machine finally took the dollar and dropped a bag of pretzels.

Ellis picked it up and didn't open it.

"I'll tell you when I can tell you everything," he said. "Not half. You've had half of everything for two years."

That landed harder than I wanted it to.

I watched him walk away, and I hated that it sounded true.

At two, I went to the writing center to work on my essay.

Micah was alone at the long table, sorting index cards into piles.

"I took your advice," I said. "I'm writing the one I want to write, not the one for the committee."
