Chapter 15: A Claim He Does Not Make

Caspian caught Alex's wrist in the records gallery before he reached the doors.

The gold thread snapped taut between them, bright enough to light the files on the nearest shelf.

Caspian did not let go.

'Was that your plan,' he said. 'Marcus. His name on the record.'

Alex looked at the hand on his wrist and then at Caspian's face.

He did not pull away.

'You want me to say yes so you can decide how to feel about it,' Alex said.

'That is not what I asked.'

'It is the question under the question.'

Caspian's grip stayed where it was.

'Then answer the one I asked,' he said.

'No,' Alex said. 'You do not get to call my choices trust.'

Caspian's jaw worked once and stilled.

He let go of the wrist.

He reached into the bag at his side and drew out a folded leather jacket, worn at the collar, the left cuff dark where something had spilled on it years ago.

He held it out.

'Take it back,' he said. 'I kept it. I should not have kept it. Take it.'

Alex looked at the jacket and did not move.

He had worn it the night they walked the river wall. He had left it on a chair the night the tribunal ruled.

'I am not taking that,' he said.

Caspian's arm stayed out for a moment longer.

Then he folded the jacket over his own forearm and held it there, both hands occupied, nothing else to do with them.

'Three years gone,' Alex said, 'and you kept a coat.'

'Yes,' Caspian said.

'That is not an answer to anything.'

'I know.'

Caspian's hand moved toward Alex's wrist again and stopped short of it.
