Chapter 21: The Toast

By Friday night, the tank was in the deputy's evidence locker and the buoy was back on a new chain.

Gus and his crew had set it at dawn on Thursday, and the harbor had stayed quiet ever since.

The Harbor Rest was packed to the walls for the Harbor Day supper.

Seven tables had become twenty, and the coffee machine older than I was had been replaced by a keg.

Everybody in Port Harlan seemed to be eating crab.

Everybody was also looking at Velun.

He sat beside me at the long table in a shirt the old crabber's wife had ironed.

A plate of crab sat in front of him, and he regarded it with deep suspicion.

"They have cooked it," he said.

"Yes."

"The poor animal."

"My father used to say sorry to each one."

"Yes. You told me." He picked up a leg. "I am saying it."

A little girl at the next table giggled, and he gave her a solemn nod.

The board of the Pacific Reach Aquarium sat at the table nearest the door.

There were three of them, two men in good coats and a woman in grey cashmere with a sharp bob.

They had driven down from Portland that afternoon.
