Chapter 24: Two Names on the Dock
The envelope was waiting on the porch on Sunday morning, under a clam shell somebody had used as a paperweight.
It was thick, cream-colored, and sealed with the aquarium's silver dolphin, which someone had crossed out with a pen.
Inside was a letter from the board chair.
The Pacific Reach Aquarium released every claim on the inlet, the boathouse and the cottage, it said, in full and forever.
The seal pavilion was cancelled, and the boardwalk plan was withdrawn.
The thirty-eight thousand dollars would go back to the Port Harlan Harbor Fund within the month.
The last line was handwritten.
"Your father's name was not ours to put on a plaque."
"It belongs on the door of the boathouse, where you left it. Please forgive the intrusion."
I read it twice.
Then I handed it to Maya, who read it over my shoulder and burst into noisy tears.
"I'm going to be a mess for the rest of the day," she said, wiping her face on her sleeve.
"Me too."
"I have a shift in Portland at six."
"You don't have to go."
"I'm coming back Friday. I swapped three weeks of nights."
She narrowed her eyes at Velun, who sat on the porch step in his long canvas trousers, drinking his fifth coffee.
"And you."
"Yes."
"I will be asking you a great many questions about the human body."
