Chapter 23: Opening Night

On opening night the upholsterer's new red velvet in row F still smelled like glue.

Twenty reporters sat in it.

I watched them from the gap in the curtain at seven fifty-five.

Twenty laps, twenty cameras.

One of them was in seat 7.

The rest of the house was Millbrook.

Mom in row C with her blue cast propped on her purse.

The bank man in row B with his notepad, a year older and a size bigger.

Cody Rains in row B beside him, in his jacket of pins, grinning like it was his own opening.

At the very back, standing against the wall behind row L, was Hal Brewer.

His lawyer stood beside him.

Hal was holding his phone up already, pointed at the stage.

If one line of that song came out of anybody's mouth, he wanted it on video.

The board chair came up behind me in the wings.

"Brynn's in the booth," she said.

"Who put her there?"

"She did. She says the light board operator has the flu." The board chair's mouth went thin. "I can't climb that ladder, Lena."
