Chapter 5: Saltmarsh

At noon on the fourth day Jiang Ke ate dumplings on a cold loading dock behind Lantern Studio.

He listened to Mo describe a blue folder.

"Seventy percent?" said Jiang.

"That's the number on the first page. Dated Sunday night."

"They ordered the audit on Monday morning," said Jiang.

"I know."

Jiang put down his chopsticks.

He was a big, slow-moving man with a wife who made his lunches and a habit of going quiet before he got angry.

"Somebody wrote the finding before the audit."

"Somebody gave it to Yu Zhenghan with the finding already in it," said Mo. "He left the folder on his desk last night."

"I read it while he was in the toilet. I photographed every page."

"Did he see you?" said Jiang.

"He was washing his hands. He was in there a long time."

Mo did not say why.

He did not say that he had gone to the toilet door afterwards and listened to the water running.

He had thought, he looks wrecked, and been furious with himself.

"Who made the folder?"

"There's a login on the spreadsheet tab. I only got half. L-U-something."

Jiang picked his chopsticks up again.

"I'll find out. Don't sleep with him."

"I'm not sleeping with him," said Mo.

"Mo."

"I'm auditing him," said Mo, and pushed his glasses up with a knuckle.

That night he locked the door at midnight.

Yu stood by the sofa with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled, reading something on his phone.

He had the look he got at that hour.

He was thinner at the jaw than he'd been a week ago.

Mo disliked noticing it.

"Phones face down," he said. "At two. That's the rule."

"You made that rule an hour ago."

"I made it for a reason," said Mo.

"What reason?"

"So I can concentrate," Mo said, and walked up to him and plucked the phone out of his hand.

He put it face down on the arm of the sofa.

Then he put both palms flat on Yu's chest and pushed.

Yu sat down hard on the leather.

He looked up with his eyebrows raised, and the pulse in his throat was visible.

"My turn," said Mo.

"The terms say nothing about turns."

"The terms say nothing about anything. They're mine." He unbuttoned his own shirt with quick fingers. "Lie back."

"Mo Chenyao."

"Lie back, Yu Zhenghan."

Yu lay back along the sofa, one arm over the cushion and the other hand gripping his own thigh.

His eyes stayed on Mo's hands.

Mo took his time.

He shrugged out of the shirt and dropped it.

He unbuckled his belt and stepped out of his trousers and underwear.

He stood naked in the low light of the server racks.
