Chapter 11: Red Plum Valley
Red Plum Valley was a bowl of black mud and white blossom, and Ja-heon had not seen it in three years.
They came down into it on the third evening, two farmers on tired mules, with the marsh mist rising to their knees.
The plum trees were in bloom.
There were hundreds of them, planted in rows by people who had nothing else to plant, and the petals lay on the water.
Seon-woo pulled his hood lower.
"It's beautiful," he said, surprised.
"It's the only thing that grows here," Ja-heon said.
The huts stood on stilts above the mud, with thatch roofs patched with reed mats and thin lines of smoke rising from them.
Children ran between the posts.
They were thin.
Ja-heon saw it now in a way he never had as a child, because he had been thin too.
Their wrists were sticks and their eyes were enormous.
When they saw him they stopped, and then a girl of about nine screamed his name and charged at his legs.
He caught her in the air.
"Brother Ja-heon!
"You came back!
"Did you bring sugar?"
"I brought you something better," he said.
He took out the bundle of dried persimmon the Lord had given him and put it in her hands.
She stared at it.
A crowd of small faces crept closer behind her, and Ja-heon knelt in the mud and gave out every last piece.
He did not look at Seon-woo.
He could feel Seon-woo watching.
The Lord's house stood at the top of the valley, a long low building of black timber with red lanterns under the eaves.
