Chapter 13: Forty Names
Ja-heon did not look away from him.
"Two," he said.
"With my sword.
"The two night watchmen at the Dongjin gate.
"I cut them down before they could ring the bell."
Seon-woo's hand stayed on his shoulder.
"And the rest?"
"I opened the gate.
"I stood outside it with a lamp and held it open while the raiders went in.
"I heard it from the wall.
"Forty people died, and I killed every one of them with a gate."
The Blood Lord breathed in the corner, thin and wet.
Outside, the Iron Bow had gone, and the valley women were shouting for water.
"Get up," Seon-woo said.
"The old man needs a healer, and the roof is burning.
"We do the work first."
They did the work.
Ja-heon pulled the arrow from Pyo's side himself, because his hands were the only ones that did not shake.
A valley woman packed the wound with plum-seed paste and bound it.
Her face was black with soot.
She would not meet Ja-heon's eye, and he did not blame her.
Seon-woo hauled water with the fighters until the grain store was a black heap.
Ja-heon watched him, his white hair gone grey with ash and his sleeves rolled up.
Seon-woo did not speak to him once.
By night the fires were out.
Ja-heon walked alone into the plum rows, where the blossom had survived, and sat down against a trunk.
His hands hung between his knees.
He heard Seon-woo come across the wet grass.
Seon-woo stood in front of him with a lantern, and his face was a closed door.
