Chapter 17: The Granary

The plum seal opened the first door.

A laundress at a river ford, a day's ride from the Pavilion, looked at it in Ja-heon's palm and went white to the lips.

Then she bowed so low that her forehead touched her knuckles.

"Lord's son," she said.

"I have waited eleven years for someone to ask me what I want."

By dusk she had hidden two grey Alliance robes in a basket of wet linen.

She drew them a map on the back of a bill of sale.

The Alliance's southern granary was a stone compound the size of a village, with a river gate and one watchtower.

They walked in through the washhouse, wearing the grey robes of a quartermaster's clerks.

Ja-heon carried a sack of ink on his shoulder.

Seon-woo had a brush behind his ear and his white hair shoved under a scholar's cap.

He looked so wrong, and so beautiful, that Ja-heon nearly dropped the ink.

"Walk," Seon-woo murmured.

"You look like a man delivering a body."

"I am a man delivering a very pretty clerk."

"Be quiet."

The granary clerk's office was at the back of the third storehouse, behind row after row of black-stamped sacks.

A scullion with a red thread on his wrist guided them.

He stopped at a corner and pointed to a door with a lock.

Ja-heon knelt and worked the lock open quickly.

Inside, shelves ran from floor to ceiling, and on them, bound in black cloth, stood hundreds of ledgers.

Seon-woo took one down and opened it.
