The children stopped at the edge of the marble.
They had walked thirty feet down the longest aisle in the world, and not one of them had let go of the hand beside them.
The girl of nine was at the front.
She looked at the nine leaders in their colors and the iron sun.
She looked at the round kind man on the dais.
Then she spoke in a clear voice that carried to the rafters.
"Is that him?
"Is that the man with the wagons?"
A sound went through the horseshoe.
The litter was set down beside Ja-heon.
Pyo Hyeon-gi lifted his head from the pillow.
He looked exactly as near death as he was, grey-lipped, with a bloody cloth at his side, and the whole hall saw it.
"Dam Cheol-ho," he said.
His voice was thin, and it filled the room.
"You came to my valley the winter of the great flood.
"You brought forty carts.
"You said, young friend, I will see you through the cold, and all I want is one small favor."
"The man is raving," the Chief said.
"He was shot in a fight, and he is delirious."
