Chapter 23: Verdict

Ja-heon woke on the sixth day with tight stitches in his ribs and a hand in his hair.

Seon-woo sat on the edge of the guest bed with his sleeves rolled, asleep upright, his head against the bedpost.

He had been there when the healer sewed Ja-heon up.

He had been there when the fever came and went.

Ja-heon learned later that Seon-woo had not left the room in five days except to vote.

The Alliance did not survive the week.

The Nine sat in the Hall for three days in a row, in the open, with the doors taken off their hinges.

Servants stood along the walls, and no one sent them away.

Ja-heon heard it in pieces from Sun-ok, who sat by his bed shelling chestnuts.

The iron-grey sun had been taken down from the dais and cut into nine pieces.

Each sect kept its own.

The seat of Chief was abolished, and no one wept.

The black granaries were opened, and the stores were sent, by decree, to Red Plum Valley and to every village the Iron Bow had burned.

The Fourth Sect's leader had read the ledgers aloud in the Hall, page after page, for six hours.

When she reached Dongjin, the whole Hall stood up.

Dam Cheol-ho had been stripped of his rank, his beads and his name.

He was carried out of the Hall in an iron cage on a cart, still smiling a little.

He would stand trial before every sect he had burned.

Nobody threw anything.

They watched him go in silence.
