Chapter 12: Thanksgiving
The foreman's cottage stands at the far end of the ranch yard, under three pecan trees.
I had been in its kitchen a thousand times as a girl.
On Thanksgiving I carried a pecan pie up the porch steps, with Cade a step behind me and not saying anything.
The big house across the yard had every curtain drawn.
Amos opened the door before we knocked.
He was sixty-seven, tall and stooped, with a white mustache and big knuckled hands.
He wore a clean pressed shirt buttoned to the neck.
He looked at his son first.
Then he looked at me.
"Tilly girl," he said.
"Amos," I said.
I had called him Mister Amos until I was twelve.
He had taught me to sit a horse when I was nine.
I did not say any of that.
The table was set for three with the good plates, and a turkey sat in the middle of it.
