Chapter 15: Ashes

The roof was already gone when I reached the point.

Fire stood up through the rafters in a roaring orange sheet, and the windows had blown out into the snow.

Wolves ran with buckets from the lake, a human chain a hundred feet long, and nothing they threw on it made any difference.

My mother's quilt was in there.

Her recipe books, her jars of dried yarrow and willow bark, her hairbrush.

The photograph of the two of us on the dock when I was nine.

I ran for the door.

"Maija!" Eskil shouted behind me. "Stop!"

His voice rolled over the whole point, and a dozen wolves froze where they stood.

It went through me and I felt nothing.

I kept going.

He caught me around the waist two steps from the porch and hauled me off my feet.

I fought him.

I kicked, and elbowed, and screamed, and he held on.

The heat struck my face and a burning rafter crashed down in a rush of sparks.

When the porch beams went, he turned his back to the blast and took it for me.

I stopped fighting.

I stood in his arms and watched my mother's cabin fall in.
