Chapter 17: My Father

My father came to the Longhouse on the third morning.

By then the ring of Tamarack wolves had stood in the snow for two days and two nights.

Nobody had been allowed in or out.

The pack ate what Leena could stretch from the pantry.

The children slept in the great hall.

Reino's daughter sat by the kitchen stove with her hands around a mug.

She had hardly said a word since the window.

I was in the kitchen elbow-deep in dishwater when Leena put her head around the door.

"Your father's at the front gate," she said. "Alone. They let him through the ring."

"Tell him to go home."

"I told him you'd say that. He said he'll stand there till you come."

I dried my hands slowly.

Eskil was at the kitchen table with a map of the territory, and he did not look up.

"You don't have to see him," he said.

"I know."

"I'll go down and stand next to you if you want."

"I want to do it alone," I said. "Leena can come and watch from the door."

"Leena's thrilled," Leena said.

He took my hand and pressed his lips to my knuckles, once.

I went down to the gate.

Veikko stood on the gravel in the same coat he'd worn at the Gathering.

His Beta's pin was still on the collar.
