Maija's POV

I held the two halves of the letter in my fist.

"You don't get to martyr yourself at me," I said.

Eskil stood very still, with the lamp throwing his shadow up the wall.

"Maija," he said.

"No. You wrote it for me, you said so right in the last line. Not to be asked to speak. As if I were a child at a window."

"You'll be hurt," he said.

"I might be. I'd like to be the one who picks."

I threw the paper on the desk.

"You were going to hand Ironwood to Reino. For ten years. Because you couldn't stand the idea of me being brave in front of you."

"Because I can't protect you," he said.

His voice cracked.

It was the first time I had heard it do that.

"I can't shift. I can't fight. I can't even bite you. Every single thing a wolf does for the woman he wants, I can't do. I'm a man in a good sweater."

"Is that what you think I'm here for?"

"I think you came because I was quiet," Eskil said. "I think it was a relief, for a while. I don't think that's love."
