Chapter 23: The Vow

Maija's POV

My father walked to the left of the Stone.

It took him a long time.

He crossed the snow with his shoulders bent, and every wolf in the meadow watched him do it.

When he reached the left side, he turned and faced the pack, and unpinned the silver Beta's badge from his collar.

His hands weren't steady.

He came back to the Stone and laid the badge on the granite beside the two silver caps.

"I told Reino Kettunen how to hurt this pack," Veikko said. "I did it for a seat. I want you all to hear me say it."

"I called my own daughter empty. I said I'd be a better man without her. I said it in front of you, and it was a lie I'd told myself for nine years."

"She's the only one of us the Stone would hear."

He turned to me.

"I'm not asking for anything," he said.

I looked at him for a long moment.

"You keep your vote," I said. "You don't keep the pin."

"Yes," he said.

"I'm not forgiving you today."

"I know."

"The point needs a new cabin," I said. "Bring a hammer in spring. We'll see."

He nodded once.

His face did something complicated, and he stepped back into the crowd and let it close over him.
