Chapter 13: Five Brothers in a Hall

I read the notice twice, standing in his shirt with my bare feet on the cold floor.

"Dead," I said. "He's going to stand in front of every Alpha and say I belong to no one."

"He is," Ansel said.

He had pulled his trousers on and nothing else, and he was looking at the page in my hand instead of at me.

"There's something I owe you before it gets light," he said. "You made me a term, and you haven't asked this question yet, so I'm answering it first."

"Then answer it."

"Blood Ridge's seer told the Colter Alpha on the night of your birthday that you were my mate."

I waited.

"The rejection was meant to leave you weak and tied to nobody. The next night Alpha Colter planned to take you into Blood Ridge's link by his own command, the way an Alpha can take in a wolf who belongs to no pack."

"And then?"

"A Crown mate who is hurt hurts the King's wolf. They meant to hurt you until I broke."

My mouth had gone dry.

"They were going to use me as a leash on you."

"Yes."

"And the writ got there first."

"By one night," he said. "I could not warn you, because the bond would have lit up the moment you knew. So I built the worst wall I could, and I put you behind it."

I looked at him for a long time.

He didn't ask me to say it was all right.

"Brant knew?" I said.

"I don't know yet."

"I'm not hiding when the Council sits," I said. "I'm going to be in that hall."

"I would rather put you in a vault."

"I know. I'm telling you, not asking."

"Understood," he said, and his mouth moved, almost a smile. "Warden."

At six I got dressed, kissed him once at the door because I wanted to, and rode the elevator down to the Hollow floor.
