Chapter 17: The Council Sits
Brinley's POV
Ansel looked at the dress for a long time.
"You wore it," he said.
"Mom brought it," I said. "I'm not going to hide from it."
"What will you do?"
"Walk into that hall in the clothes they took from me."
Hester held up the cloth-wrapped chalice with both hands.
"Do you want this?" she said.
"Not today. Keep it for later."
She nodded and tucked it against her ribs.
"One thing before we go in," Ansel said. "The Crown will not claim you today. I turned that offer down to the man's face, and I'll turn it down in the hall."
"So I speak for myself."
"Whatever's said in there, you say it."
"Good," I said, and I meant it.
The Council hall was the biggest room I had ever stood in.
It had a ring of long tables at the center for the Alphas and tiers of stone benches going up in every direction.
Four hundred wolves sat in them, in their pack colors, and the noise stopped when I walked in.
Dessa walked on my left in her grey Warden jacket.
The big man who had written the handbook walked on my right and winked at me.
I kept my eyes up.
My father sat at the Silver Creek table with my brothers behind him, and I did not look at him yet.
The Colter Alpha was already on his feet.
"Your Majesty," he said, and bowed an inch. "Alphas. I move the contest of the Crown's claim on one Brinley Ludlow."
"There is no claim," said the clerk at the head of the table.
"Then the woman has no standing at all. Her own Alpha declared her dead at this table in the spring."
He let that sit.
"The dead belong to the first Alpha who takes them in."
A murmur went up the tiers.
"Alpha Ludlow," said the clerk. "Stand."
My father stood.
The whole hall waited for him to do what Alphas do.
