Chapter 13: The Old Law

I turned and looked at Caspian.

His face was blank, and that was how I knew.

A man who is surprised looks surprised.

A man who has been waiting for a thing to arrive looks like he is waiting for the blow.

"You knew," I said.

He didn't answer in front of the ring.

"Not here," he said.

"Here is where she read it."

The envoy cleared his throat.

"Majesty, the Council received a copy of the statute from a Stonefall courier at dawn. The seal on the original was found lifted. I am obliged to say the courier's name was the Stonefall Alpha's."

So that was who had used a chisel on a dead man's box.

Brant's father had not come to Greywater for a wedding.

He had come with a weapon he thought the King couldn't answer.

"The Council will sit on the thirtieth day of the keeping," the envoy went on. "Until then the ward stays in the throne's keeping. No Alpha may claim her."

"No Alpha may claim me," I said.

"No, Miss Haldane."

"And the King?"

The envoy did not look at Caspian.

"The statute names the royal line, Miss. It's a matter for the Court."

I walked to the Crown car without saying goodbye to anyone.

Joss caught my sleeve at the door.

"Bri."

"Not now."

"Do you want me to come?"

"I want you to stay with your pack."

He let go.

It was a quiet hour on the road, two hours of pine trunks sliding by.

Caspian drove.

He didn't try to talk, and I didn't let him.
