Chapter 5: Greywater Calls

The Crown guard held the north line until sunrise, and by then my father's truck was at the gate.

I watched it come up the lake road from the window of the guest room.

I had slept for three hours in a bed that smelled of cedar.

It was the first time in my life I had woken up warm.

The housekeeper knocked and came in with a tray, and she did not say a word about the truck.

"Eat first," she said. "Then you can decide how much of them you want to see."

I ate the eggs.

Then I put on my own boots and walked down to the gate.

Caspian was already there, leaning on the stone post with his arms folded.

He didn't speak when I came up beside him.

He only stepped half a pace back, so I would be the one in front.

My father got out of the truck.

He looked ten years older than he had on the lawn.

His shirt was torn at the shoulder, and there was dried blood on his jaw, and the hand he held up to shade his eyes was shaking.

Joss climbed out the other side with his left arm in a sling.

Behind them the truck bed was full of Greywater wolves, six of them, bruised, all in human shape.

"Thora," my father said.

"Alpha Haldane."

He winced.

"Fine," he said. "Thora. Thank you for seeing me."

"I'm standing at a gate with four Crown guards and a king. I'm not doing you a favor."

He glanced at the guards, and I saw him decide to ignore them.

"Rogues came over the north ridge before midnight," he said. "Eleven of them. I couldn't shift. Joss couldn't shift. Not one of us could, and I've shifted every day since I was fourteen."
