Chapter 15: The Elder on the Stone

Linnea's POV

We rode up the mountain at a run with ten Ashmoor wolves behind us.

I smelled the turned earth before I saw it.

The slope below the broken pillar was torn up in long black gashes. Spades lay in the grass. A cloak lay in the dirt where someone had dropped it and fled.

The flat gray stone over Tilda's grave had not moved.

The Great Elder sat on it.

He had his staff across his knees, and his sleeve was black and wet from the shoulder to the wrist.

"They came at dusk," he said. "Twenty of them."

"Twenty," Rowan said.

"I told them whose grave it was. Two of them tried to lift me off it, so I hit them."

He nodded toward a spade handle snapped in two.

"The rest went away when the necklace woke."

I looked down. The joined halves on my chest were glowing through my dress, a steady white.

The Elder had held the line against twenty men with a stick and an old man's pride, and he had bled for it.

I did not thank him.

"Let me see the arm," Rowan said.

He knelt, cut the sleeve with his knife, and I saw a deep slash along the Elder's forearm, still seeping.

Rowan pressed a folded cloth to it and wound a strip of his own shirt tight.

His hands were quick and sure. The red mark from last night still crossed his palm.

I watched him tie the knot.

I thought of that palm on my wrist, and of how he had held on while the light burned out of me.

I made myself look at the grave instead.

"Why did you stay?" I asked the Elder.
