Chapter 4: The Council Ring
The council ring is a circle of standing stones on the hill above the feast hall.
At dawn the whole pack stood inside it in the cold.
They brought me up the hill in silver chains with a guard on each arm.
Gareth stood at the center in his black coat, with Cora a step behind him and Emmett beside her, gray in the face.
Rowan Breckenridge stood at the edge of the stones with an older Alpha from the eastern territory.
The older man was white-haired and leaned on a cane, and he did not smile at anyone.
"Three Alphas have come to witness this," Gareth said. "I welcome that."
"I will be brief."
He turned to the pack.
"My Luna left her service to the Goddess. She broke the pillar the pack spent five years filling. She disrupted a sacred naming, and she accuses her own family of murder without proof."
"The penalty for oath-breaking is death."
The pack murmured.
I looked at every face in the ring.
Most of them looked away.
"I speak for the accused," I said.
Gareth's mouth thinned.
"The accused is an oath-breaker. She has no voice in this ring."
"The Goddess's law says a Luna may call proof," I said. "Any Luna, at any trial, before any sentence."
"You are no longer."
"Then the witnesses may," Rowan said.
He did not raise his voice.
"Three Alphas witness this trial. Any one of us may call proof. I call it."
The old Alpha tapped his cane on the stone.
"Seconded."
Gareth's jaw worked.
"What proof?"
"Her daughter's body," Rowan said. "My healer will examine it here, in front of the pack."
"That is a desecration."
