"Corina?"
Darek's voice came from the kitchen door, thick with sleep and worry.
I heard the wooden spoon hit the floor.
"Are you ill?"
He crossed the yard and dropped to his knees in the dew.
His hands went to my face, my forehead, my pulse.
Very gently, he tried to look into my mouth.
"I'm the nurse," I said, and it came out half a laugh and half a sob. "Stop that."
"You were sick."
"I was."
"It's the feast.
It's the pig, I told Hesper about the pig."
"It isn't the pig."
He went still.
I took his wrist, the one with the thorn, and laid his big scarred hand flat against my belly.
His palm was hot through the thin cloth.
"It's the bleed I haven't had since before the rain," I said.
"And the porridge, which I'll never eat again."
His amber eyes came up to mine.
I watched the whole thing arrive in his face.
